The Incomplete Book of Dog Names
When I saw this little treasure in a bookstore in Chatham, New York I had to buy it. It’s got four of my favorite things in one wee package:
Books
Dogs
Tininess
Quotes
Behold, the letterpress miniature book The Incomplete Book of Dog Names:
This 3.25″ x 4.5″ nugget is a “…collection from actual creatures now living either in the flesh or in memory.”
There are pages of dog names, most of which fell off the Top 10 Most Popular list long ago. Many of the names are historical and literary in nature, which I dig.
Personally, I’m putting Ms. Marple on my Names-for-Future-Dogs list (right next to Hoagie, which currently has the #1 spot). You guys have a list like that too, right?
A few quotes about dogs are sprinkled through the list of names. My two favorites:
You can purchase your own tiny copy here.
p.s. for those of you who work or volunteer with animals, I’ve been writing about the emotional side of our work over on my new blog. If you want one easy place to find everything I’m writing about, you might like to subscribe to my monthly(ish) e-letter. I’ll be sending one out next week!

It is pretty comical when ‘Jake’ is the odd name on the list! Miss Marple is a name we shall most definitely share! That one sticks real good!
I know right?!
Do people *not* keep a word document three pages long of cute future dog names? Top three on my list are Wedge, Wash, and Matilda.
3 pages? I’m impressed. I love all three of those names too. Around here Wedge would turn into Wedgie pretty fast (which is a good thing)!
“Zoltan” I need a “Zoltan!”
Yes, I loved that one too!
I’m partial to Stardust! 🌠
hippie!
Super cute book!
The book of dog names? Have one that I began in the 70s…glad to see others have that grand obsession!
We find ourselves saying “that would be a great name for our next dog!” more often than we probably should! We’re partial to the very human names for dogs — Zach, Peter, Jennifer.
I absolutely have a list of names for future pets tucked away in my desk drawer!
I’m shocked at how many of these names have belonged to pets I’ve owned. Then again, I’ve never followed naming trends. Right now I have a Barney, Morgan Izaiah, Maple Sugar, and Patch Farnsworth.
