One Weekend in Maine…

We had a blizzard this weekend. How about you?

Three feet of snow in 24 hours + hurricane-force winds = six foot high snow drifts.

It was awesome. The dogs can tell it better than I can, so here’s Boogie and Birdie (and one snow ninja):

Day One: We dig out. Note: for perspective, the snow ninja is almost 6 and half feet tall.

Because of the winds, there were huge snow drifts and bare spots where the grass was showing.

Snow Face.

Day Two: The sun comes out. Birdie smells the air.

Day Two: The sun comes out. Birdie smells the air. She is sad to report that it does not smell like peanut butter or pepperoni. She heads back to the house.

Boogie channels his inner bunny rabbit to hop through the snow drifts.

Where's Boogie?

Boogie?

Spotted!

Birdie returns for a quick flight around the yard. Flap those ears Bird!

Super Bird Dog!

Did someone call for a Super Bird?

That's my girl!

Boogie digs digging

Boogie digs…digging

Boogie dives in!

Boogie gets ready to go in face first.

But what he really wants is to play catch. Here's Boogie waiting for me to throw some snow.

The only thing he loves more than digging is playing catch. Here’s Boogie waiting for me to throw some snow.

Eye on the prize.

Going for it.

YES!

YES!

And then it was time to go inside and warm up...

…and then it was time to go inside for a nap.

For me, playing with the dogs is the best part of snow days.  I hope that those of you who got stuck in the blizzard were  safe and able to have some fun too.

Wishing all of you a warm, play-filled week!

Safety Concerns Stoke Criticism of AKC

You wrote some stuff last year regarding the massive breakdown at the Spindletop Refuge. Thought you might find this article interesting.
Many Animal Lovers Now See American Kennel Club as an Outlier
By MARY PILON and SUSANNE CRAIG (NYT)

The American Kennel Club is best known as the go-to place for registering purebreds and as the governing body for dog shows. But the club is coming under increased scrutiny.

One thought that occurs to me is this; in other sporting events, when these sort of accusations come up, people get stripped of their titles and awards, like Lance Armstrong, or Pete Rose in baseball.
It will be interesting, to see what fallout occurs.

It was giving me trouble before so maybe it will go this time.

      • Thanks Ellen, I’ll read it today. Of course, from what I’ve learned so far, I’m not surprised. Anyone can purchase AKC papers for their dogs…so the paper are meaningless and don’t guarantee a thing about the quality of the breeding program. I have a friend that was able to get AKC papers on their cat, just to prove the papers are a joke! The AKC should be ashamed of themselves for giving their stamp of approval to anything that can pay (including puppy mill breeders). Sigh. We have many miles to go.

  5. Love your pictures! Weird question but where did you get your wooden fence? We’re in the market for a new one for our dog and yours looks nice and sturdy

    • Hi Hope, we used a NH company called Four Seasons for our fence!

I can imagine which is why I moved to TX from Chicago. In Houston about 6 yerars ago we had about 4 inches. It was nice for a day, watching the neighbors go gaga over it with their kids making snowballs. My last snowfall in Chicago we had 21 inches and sub zero temps.

Thank you for the wonderful winter pictoral of your dogs and the Maine snow. Needless to say, I am incredibly jealous. As a former Wisconsin-ite and now an Indiana transplant, I miss the winters like that. Indiana makes a HUGE deal over a 1/2 inch of snow. Glad that everyone is ok and that the pups have enjoyed the snow. Especially a fan of Boogie, as my Kayla is that way in the snow. Memories…

    Thanks!

  13. Yes, we got the snow too, although we didn’t have any bare spots at all! And the dogs had to swim through it, poor things. They didn’t enjoy it as much as your two did. 🙂
