We made one after reading about this on Badrap too! It was the saving grace for our energetic new rescue. Once we taught him the basic commands, this was the key for perfecting them and practicing "settle." And it's the only way we can wear him out!! But I never thought of decorating it...love it!!

[...] Rile/Recovery work with a Flirt Pole: You can go the homemade route or buy a premade “chase it” toy, but either way, if you have a dog that loves chasing stuff (and has healthy joints), this giant cat toy will rock their world and burn a ton of energy. What’s key to this? Your dog must know basic commands such as: sit, down, wait, take it and drop it for this to be a safe, fun game. If you want to do this inside, get a smaller 2-3 foot flirt pole, for outside, you can go big! Before you try it, take a look at this video from Bad Rap and read this how-to. [...]

[...] Chase-it Wand Toy for Dogs: Why should kitties have all the fun with wand toys (also sometimes referred to as a flirt pole?) This sturdy toy (http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1645) looks just like a long horse whip with a stuffed animal attached to the end. In fact, if you can’t find this toy, you might check to see if there’s a Horse supply store or a Petsmart in your area that carries horse supplies and tie the end of a horse whip around a toy. One perk of the Chase it toy is that it comes with a velcro strap around the neck of the stuffed animal, so if that toy is damaged, you can swap out any toy that you can fit the velcro around, instead of buying a specific replacement toy (though those are available of course). It comes in a few lengths, but both are long, which makes it great for playing from a chair, though watch out for your lamps! Here’s a neat link that gives some great behavioral advice about how to make this a perfect game, and another way to make one, if you’re the DIY type. http://notesfromadogwalker.com/2012/04/24/flirt-pole/ [...]
